FAQ

  • What is "inro"?

Inro is something like a European "pouch". It has a rigid structure composed of overlapping containers. It also has an aesthetic function and is usually a work of applied art. For several reasons, which you can learn from the article on this website, the Japanese carried small items in specially constructed "boxes" attached to their belts. See inro examples in the Gallery and Portfolio. Can inro be purchased? Of course, you can buy collector's inro at auctions, bazaars or in popular online stores such as e-bay. Prices, like other works of art, vary greatly. There are nice inros for $100 or $200, but really high-quality ones cost $1,000 or more. You can't buy a newly made inro because few people in the world make them using traditional methods. Is it possible to buy the inro I try to create from time to time? Can not. I make them for fun, sometimes as gifts for friends or acquaintances.

  • What is "netsuke"?

Netsuke is a type of keychain, a lump made in various forms (round, spherical, elongated, flattened, often as a small sculpture) the size of a walnut. It is attached to the end of the inro bonding cable. It is used to plug the belt so that the entire inro is secured and hangs under the belt.

  • What is "ojime"?

An ojime is a small ball or other shaped object with a hole drilled through it for a string. Made of various materials, sometimes decorated. It is used to connect inro segments together.

  • What is "obi"?

Obi - a belt worn in Japanese costumes, made of a long piece of narrow or wide material (fabric) tied around the waist.

  • What is "sagemono"?

Sagemono is a general name for items worn by attaching to an obi belt.

  • What are: "tabako-ire"; "yatate"; "kin-chaku" etc. ?

These are  types of sagemono. Types of pouches made of leather or other material worn similarly to inro. Tabako-ire - a tobacco container, yatate - a container for writing utensils, kin-chaku - a type of purse.Co to jest "inro"?
